Thursday 13 #4: Thirteen of My Favorite Things to Eat

By Mark Jochim, Thursday, 9 September 2010 0630

Thursday 13 - Food 01

I love to eat, and I have the not-so-slender waistline to prove it.  Since arriving in Thailand some five years ago, I’ve had to severely alter my eating habits as many of the dishes I loved in America are unavailable here – at least at an affordable price.   Although I lived for many years in the  Southwest with its many variations on Mexican and Tex-Mex fare, the spiciness of my favorites there left me completely unprepared for the utter fieriness of most Thai food thus I stay away from the majority of it.  The list includes mostly main courses but there are also a few snacks and guilty pleasures as well, plus commentary.

  1. Soy-Sauce Marinated Steak – My mother used to make this as my birthday dinner usually accompanied by a baked potato with sour cream and occasionally a desert of her sublime chocolate pudding cake, I haven’t had a steak this good since I moved away from home some twenty or twenty-five years ago.

Thursday 13 #3: 13 of the Greatest Movies I’ve Never Seen

By Mark Jochim, Thursday, 2 September 2010 0630

Thursday 13 - Films

This week’s list was inspired as I was perusing the “100 Greatest Films” section of AMC’s wonderful Filmsite.org.  I’ve been a big fan of old movies (particularly classic film noir) for as long as I can remember.  I hold many happy memories of late-night viewing (usually via American Movie Classics) with my parents back in Kansas some twenty-five or thirty years ago.  Some of the films on AMC’s site that I haven’t seen really surprised me.  I do hope to find a few of these soon so that I can see what I’ve been missing all these years.

13 of the Greatest Movies I’ve Never Seen*

  1. The Godfather (1972)
  2. West Side Story (1961)
  3. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

  5. The Night Of The Hunter (1955)
  6. The Wild Bunch (1969)
  7. Taxi Driver (1976)

Thursday 13 #1 (29 July 2010)

By Mark Jochim, Thursday, 29 July 2010 0640

4751308455_c122f60f2a_mI’ve been participating in the Thursday 13 meme, hosted by http://thursday-13.com/, over on my other blog – The Expat Bookworm – for about a month now.  I’ve decided to keep the lists there focused on books and teaching and include those not related to reading here on BJP.  My first one here looks at my own past – places where I have lived.  All are located in the U.S.A., unless otherwise noted.  The earlier years are mostly guesses due to a rather faulty memory (note to self: ask my sister to confirm these!).
